7 Things to Do in Seogwipo — Picked by a Dive Instructor Who Works Here Daily

Things to do in Seogwipo chosen not by a guidebook but by a local dive instructor - from Saeyeon Bridge to the underwater world of Beomseom, with time needed, photo spots, local tips, and a route linking all seven.

The seven places worth your time in Seogwipo: Saeyeon Bridge & Saeseom, Oedolgae Rock & Hwangwooji Coast, Cheonjiyeon Falls, Jeongbang Falls, Maeil Olle Market, the Healing Forest — and the underwater world of Beomseom. This isn't a guidebook ranking; it's what a dive instructor who works in this town every day actually recommends, ordered by how travelers respond. Each spot comes with time needed and a local tip, and a suggested route linking all seven closes the article.

1. Saeyeon Bridge & Saeseom loop — the classic Seogwipo sea view

The white sail-shaped bridge connects Seogwipo harbor to the islet of Saeseom, where a ~1km boardwalk loops the island with the sea following you between the trees. Allow about 40 minutes; there's no entry fee, making it the easiest first-evening plan after arrival.

Instructor's tip: this walk is one of the few places where the three sister islands — Beomseom, Munseom, Seopseom — line up in a row. The three were born together in volcanic eruptions ~800,000 years ago. Come at dusk when the bridge lights switch on.

2. Oedolgae Rock & Hwangwooji Coast — a lone 20m sea stack

A 20-meter rock pillar standing alone in the sea, reached by a coastal path on Olle Trail 7 — about ten minutes from the parking lot to the lookout. Next door, the Hwangwooji coast hides the "Seonnyeotang" natural rock pools, a famous summer snorkeling spot.

Instructor's tip: the island you see straight ahead from the lookout is Beomseom — many of our guests come here the day before their dive to preview tomorrow's sea. If you swim at the rock pools, a life vest is a must; depth and swell change quickly.

3. Cheonjiyeon Falls — the waterfall that stays open until 10pm

A 22-meter waterfall at the end of a flat, subtropical-forest walkway, within walking distance of downtown. The round trip from the ticket gate takes 30–40 minutes. Unusually, it opens until around 10pm.

Instructor's tip: the illuminated evening visit is quieter and more atmospheric than daytime — a perfect after-dinner stroll.

4. Jeongbang Falls — Korea's only waterfall that drops into the sea

A 23-meter column of water pours off a cliff straight into the ocean — the only coastal waterfall in Korea and a rarity even in Asia. Stairs lead down from the entrance to the pebble beach at its base.

Instructor's tip: the photo is from the pebble beach, close enough to feel the spray. You'll climb the stairs back up, so slot this on a non-diving day.

5. Maeil Olle Market — Seogwipo's kitchen

A covered traditional market whose food alleys — black pork skewers, abalone gimbap, hallabong juice — draw an even mix of locals and travelers by evening. The liveliest place in town.

Instructor's tip: it slots perfectly into a post-dive afternoon, and restaurants near the market serve the world's #1 crab dish, ganjang-gejang. No better finish for a diving appetite.

6. Seogwipo Healing Forest — 60-year-old cypress for ₩1,000

Fifteen kilometers of trails across 320–760m of Hallasan's southern slopes, through cypress groves over 60 years old, with step-free boardwalk sections — all for a ₩1,000 entry fee. Reservation via the Seogwipo e-Ticket site is required.

Instructor's tip: order matters here — because of the elevation, go the day before you dive; ascending after a dive raises decompression risk. Sandals and Crocs are refused at the gate, so pack sneakers.

7. Underwater Beomseom — Seogwipo's real landmark is below the surface

Everything above is on land; Seogwipo's most overwhelming scenery is underwater. Beomseom's sea, where the protected soft coral colonies (Natural Monument No. 442) blanket the cliffs in crimson and violet, is five minutes by boat from the harbor — the very spot nature documentaries come to film. You don't need to swim — a discover dive with a one-on-one instructor takes half a day.

Instructor's tip: cruise boats circle the island, but Beomseom's true face lies 10–25m down. The seventh sight, saved for whoever has seen the other six.

A route linking all seven

  • Day 1: Healing Forest (afternoon) → Maeil Olle Market (evening)
  • Day 2: Beomseom dive (morning) → gejang lunch by the market → Saeyeon Bridge at dusk
  • Day 3: Oedolgae (morning) → Cheonjiyeon or Jeongbang Falls → airport

The order accounts for post-dive altitude and pre-flight rules — the full logic is in the 3-day Seogwipo itinerary.

FAQ

What are the best things to do in Seogwipo?

Saeyeon Bridge & Saeseom, Oedolgae Rock & the Hwangwooji coast, Cheonjiyeon Falls, Jeongbang Falls, Maeil Olle Market, and the Healing Forest — plus, for anyone who loves the sea, the soft coral world of Beomseom on a discover dive. Seven in total.

Can I see Seogwipo's sights in one day?

The bridge, Oedolgae, both waterfalls, and the market are all in the downtown area — one day covers them. Add the Healing Forest (half day, reservation) and a Beomseom dive (half day) and a three-day stay fits perfectly.

Can I just see Beomseom by boat without diving?

Cruise boats do circle the island, but Beomseom's real scenery — the soft coral colonies — lies at 10–25m depth. Even non-swimmers can see it on a discover dive with an instructor one-on-one.
